Judith, Holofernes, and T-rump

I realize I can be an art nerd, and I certainly get the horrendous Daesh reality, but my first reaction to Kathy Griffin’s shtick was that it was a riff on Judith and Holofernes, a famous scene depicted by hundreds of artists from the middle ages to Donatello to Klimt, to name just a few.

Given all the depictions of assault on effigies of Obama, and our long American political tradition of all sorts of violent images, I find the rush to turn Griffin into a pariah both ignorant and excessive.

Sliding Down the Razor Blade of Politics

images-1 images

Trump is going to continue to use up all the oxygen in the room, in the media, in the national political consciousness. And HRC will be gasping for air and attention. The MSM dotes on him like a helicopter parent enabling a rotten, spoiled, bullying child.

Hillary has two public tonal and personality notes — monotone wonk for interviews, and ascending shrill for campaign rallies. Where Trump is clever and entertaining to his followers, and hypnotic like a poisonous cobra to the rest of us, she, unfortunately, is just very hard to listen to after about 15 minutes. And there is zero sense of wondering what unexpected thing she might say next.

Of course she will be able to nail him to the wall on all things presidential in one-on-one debates, but no voters are really going to be swayed at that point — everyone already knows that “what you see is what you get” with both of them. What is there to learn?

I hate this feeling of whiplash between thinking that this vicious ignorant buffoon could never get elected, and the sinking feeling that the outcome could be razor thin — in either direction.

“Save Your Confederate Money, Boys…”

“According to P.P.P., 70 percent of Mr. Trump’s voters in South Carolina wish the Confederate battle flag were still flying on their statehouse grounds. (It was removed last summer less than a month after a mass shooting at a black church in Charleston.) The polling firm says that 38 percent of them wish the South had won the Civil War. Only a quarter of Mr. Rubio’s supporters share that wish, and even fewer of Mr. Kasich’s and Mr. Carson’s do.

Nationally, the YouGov data show a similar trend: Nearly 20 percent of Mr. Trump’s voters disagreed with the freeing of slaves in Southern states after the Civil War. Only 5 percent of Mr. Rubio’s voters share this view.

Mr. Trump’s popularity with white, working-class voters who are more likely than other Republicans to believe that whites are a supreme race and who long for the Confederacy may make him unpopular among leaders in his party. But it’s worth noting that he isn’t persuading voters to hold these beliefs. The beliefs were there — and have been for some time…”

I’M both laughing and horrified like most everyone else, but the malignant chill he casts is making him less funny. Watching him in front of an audience is like peering into an open sewer of a mind of unbridled ego, venom, and ruthlessness.

How is it that such a person can attract a following? I find it hard to even look at his face when he speaks. And really, doesn’t his hair obsession make him a joke right out of the gate? Who are the people who get past that and listen to him?

I admit I’ve believed that the ship of state, however inherently flawed, would manage to stay afloat. But it’s getting horrifying to watch it turn into a disastrous Ship Of Fools.

The Repubs, once again, have no one remotely capable of functioning on a national, let alone international, level. No One! And in a two-party system (such as it is) in today’s world, that’s frightening.
